If you have never visited a live cam site, the whole idea can seem a little opaque. Who are the performers? Who runs the platforms? Why are some shows free while others cost money? This guide walks through the basics so you know exactly what you are looking at before you click anywhere.
The short version
A cam site is a live-streaming platform for adults. Independent performers — usually called "models" or "creators" — broadcast from their own homes or studios, and viewers watch and chat with them in real time. The platform provides the technology, payment processing, age verification and moderation, and takes a share of what performers earn.
Think of it as a cross between a streaming service and a creator marketplace. Each performer runs their own channel, sets their own schedule and decides what kind of interaction they offer. The platform is the venue; the performer is the business.
Who the performers are
Performers on reputable sites are consenting adults who have signed up, verified their identity and age with government ID, and agreed to the platform's rules. Most work for themselves. They choose when to go live, what to charge for private time and which countries or regions can see their stream.
Many performers treat camming as a genuine career. They build a regular audience, keep a schedule, and promote themselves on social media. That is why you will often see the same names consistently at the top of a site's listings.
How the platforms make money
Almost every major cam site uses a token or credit system. You buy tokens with real money, then spend them inside the site. Common ways to spend tokens include:
- Tips — small voluntary payments during a public show, often tied to goals or menu items the performer has set.
- Private shows — one-on-one time billed per minute.
- Group or ticketed shows — a fixed price to join a show with other viewers.
- Extras — things like fan clubs, recorded content or direct messages.
The platform keeps a percentage of each token spent, and the performer receives the rest. The exact split varies by site and is one of the things we will cover in our reviews.
Free to watch, paid to interact
Most large sites let you watch public broadcasts for free, often without even creating an account. Free viewers can usually see the stream; registered (but non-paying) users can usually chat; and paying users get extra features like private messaging and private shows.
This "freemium" model is why the free side of cam sites is so large — performers use public shows to attract an audience, and a small share of viewers choose to tip or pay for more. We go into more detail in our guide to free vs paid cam shows.
What a typical visit looks like
- You land on the site's homepage and see a grid of thumbnails showing who is live right now.
- You filter by category, language, region or other tags to narrow things down.
- You click into a room. The stream plays alongside a chat panel and, usually, a tip menu or goal tracker.
- If you want to chat, you create a free account with a username — no real name required.
- If you decide to tip or go private, you buy a token package and spend from that balance.
How a directory like ours fits in
Because there are dozens of cam platforms, each with thousands of performers, finding someone you will enjoy can take a while. A directory brings listings from several sites into a single place, so you can browse by category without hopping between tabs.
When you click through from a directory to a cam site, the link is usually an affiliate link. That means the directory may earn a commission if you sign up or buy tokens — at no extra cost to you. We explain exactly how this works on our affiliate disclosure page.
Before you start
A few ground rules worth knowing:
- Cam sites are strictly for adults. Reputable platforms verify every performer and require visitors to confirm they are 18 or older (or the age of majority where they live).
- Laws differ by country and region. Check that viewing adult content is legal where you are.
- Set a budget before you buy tokens, and treat it as entertainment spending.
- Protect your privacy — our guide on staying safe and private on cam sites covers the essentials.
Once you understand the basic model — free public streams, paid interaction, independent performers — cam sites become much easier to navigate. When we launch, our reviews will compare the major platforms side by side so you can pick the one that fits you best.
